Bus network topology

In bus network topology, all the nodes in the network are directly connected to the central cable running down the network - this is called the backbone. The data is sent up and down until it reaches the correct node.

Node alignment in bus topology has some advantages:

It is  easy to connect the bus network
It requires less cabling than the star topology, and it is cheaper to install
However, bus network topology also has its disadvantages:

If the spinal cable breaks, the entire bus network fails
Terminators should be installed at each end of the spine
Having a backbone can increase data
Bus network topology are not widely used in modern networking because they are not suitable for dealing with large amounts of data. They are used when a small, cheap and often ad hoc network that does not rely on very low data transfer speeds is required.
